Making sense out of HR department! HRBP = Human Relations Business Participant?

It is people who work to make a Google a Google , Facebook a Facebook - the most important asset of any business is obviously people (employees, consultants & vendors ).

Typically Human Resource department is responsible for people related issues, people who work towards business growth. Do you believe that HR in your organization is part of the main business stream ?

If you just answered a ‘Yes’, then think "Why is HR not part of the strategic decisions of the company like merger & acquisition, setting business goals, outsourcing decision, expansion into new country, new business domain launch, profit and loss evaluations and other significant topics?"

Doesn’t all these strategic decision revolves around people ? So, why is your HR missing when you took/take these decisions ?

I’m not saying its just the business leaders’ fault to consider HR function as cost / support center which relegates itself to on-boarding, exit interviews, benefits, creating workplace policy and fun activities. It's also a reflection and interest of the HR folks to stay in their comfort zone. Even if they a have great business ideas which can support :
  • Employee engagement
  • Leadership development
  • Coaching
  •  Motivating employees
  •  Learning & Innovation
  •  Organization Culture
or thoughts on the impact of a business decision on the quality of work life balance etc. they just stop themselves or get pushed back by their senior HR managers, if not by business leaders.

How many HR folks have heard this, "That's how we do business or its business demand, just do it!" There have been several discussions to involved HR in the mainstream decision making but those discussions have not fetched anything significant.

Business leaders: Please give your HR a chance to be part of your strategic decision making, they are voice of the employees and advocates of people who work for you and give you the business result. I urge you to welcome their thoughts and work a strategy around people and see the business results.

HR folks: This is the time for you to brush up your skills and gain more knowledge to support business decision while keeping people in mind at the end of the day you are HRBP = Human Relations Business Participant.

Just get down to the ground and understand the business you support. You have a critical role to play.

A Quick Women Leadership Guide for India

Stop self pity and guilty
Yes, that’s true. What’s done is done you can’t change it now. Just move on in your life and career and never look back. Stop doing pity, excuses or feeling guilty and never give some women or men a chance to make you feel that way.

Follow Your Passion
Do what you love. Money is not the most important thing in the world. If you follow your passion, do what you love, the money always, always follows

Always Be the Best
No matter what you’re doing—whether it’s making copies or checking page numbers—always do your best work. Always exceed expectations…. If you’re fantastic, it’s hard for people to not notice you. It also minimizes obstacles.

Always Be Nice but not Weak
One should treat people how they want to be treated; you have to understand the person’s motivation [and] agenda…. Be appreciative; thank everybody for what they do, but don’t do it too much or unnecessary which makes you look weak.

Seek help and Network
Seek help from mentors, help from networking organizations, peers, colleagues and when you get to the point [that you can] give it back,” do so. It’s time for you to build your own network.

Continuously Learn, Improve, and Grow
It’s easy to fall into your niche, find something you’re really good at, and keep doing it over and over and over, If you ever want to move beyond that point, you have to stretch yourself. Do something that’s a little bit scary, and after a year it won’t be scary any more.

Take Care of Your People
It’s not just about what you need from them. It’s about actually caring about what’s going on in their lives, what’s going on in their careers. Sometimes that’s in direct conflict with what you need. You, as a leader, need to step back and think about what’s better for the person in question.

Be a Salesperson and negotiate
No matter what job you are doing, everybody is in sales and marketing. You have to sell your ideas, your insight and your strategies. You have to sell yourself and earn credibility and trust of others. Always know what you are doing. Being right isn’t enough, “If you have the best solution, the best idea, it does not matter, if people do not buy into your idea.” Keep negotiating for best idea or solution, whether it’s yours or not.

Finally, Never Stop….Keep walking
There are different phases in your life, where you have to leave the job or slow down for some time but never stop being a leader in whatever situation of life you are in. You are what you are and you can do what you can dare to dream.

With thanks to womankind from a man,

Streamline your content delivery strategy with Amazon Web Services

So, you have the best content ready to share and definitely your aim is to make it available to your target audience always and everywhere.

Let’s talk a little about two words: Always and everywhere, these words are very generic but most powerful, think about your audience they are everywhere and they want the access always, when they need it from different mediums like, computer, phone, tablets and Ipod.

How we are sharing content today! by blogs, videos, sharing PPT on presentation sharing website, posting on Organization, University and own website. Also, sharing the same links on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn .

If you are hosting your content via Learning Management System (LMS) which reside on your organization server or somewhere with very good data center in the one part of the world then again you have to think about availability of your content in other part of the world at same time, speed and access medium.

The main challenge everyone facing today is right platform or infrastructure to host your knowledge content and make it accessible to infinite audience with multiple access and no down time.

May be during one of the month/ day / hour or on a particular content piece your audience grows suddenly and also comes back to manageable no’s after some time. The important question here is, Did your current infrastructure support this?

Amazon Web services (AWS) have this answer, which other major education provider also using like Harvard, Maryland and others. If you are also thinking of moving your LMS to AWS cloud this is the right time.

Amazon Web services (AWS) also running a special grant program for Education, educators, academic researchers, and students.

AWS will let you focus on the content and relive you from delivery infrastructure problems. Now your audience can access your content everywhere and always.......

Google elearning Suite

Welcome to the endless world of Google. I can still recollect my memories of year 1996, 97 and 98 (up to December when PC magazine recognize Google as Search Engine). My friends use to refer me a website and I end up writing the complete web address. Sometimes I got it wrong also and then a new world war starts to find the right one.
Now days I never bother to remember a website address, just use Google Search and every time I find many new useful links.

Back to the business; Google has completely changes the dimensions of learning.

Let’s consider a scenario:
A Small or Medium size enterprise (or a NGO/ School/ College) wants to promote learning culture in their organization besides they do not have budget to spend on this.  A little tricky, but solution is “Google”

You can start your eLearning blog on Blogger (just like this) and provides selective access to user from your organization or College. Use Google Picasa for embedding pictures.

Google YouTube platform serves for not just delivering videos online but also you can convert your PPT to Video (shareware available on web) and publish it. You can also embed Videos in you’re learning blogs. Change settings to Private for controlling access.
Concerned about content localization, try Google Translate.

Google Calendar can serve as your formal training calendar. Use Google Docs to Create, share and download knowledge material in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Try Google Video Chat to deliver live instructor led training session and participants can also collaborate in real time on Gtalk.

How I can forget Gmail, well it can be your knowledge sharing platform for informal knowledge sharing and storage space is practically unlimited also its search feature is fabulous. You might also want to share updates, photos, videos, and more.  Start conversations about the things you find interesting on Google Buzz.

Keep yourself updated on the topic of your interest with Google Alerts & Google Reader. Get more subject knowledge with Google Books. Want some in depth subject knowledge try Google Scholar. Collaborate and discuss on topic of similar interest with Google Groups it will also helps to target Tacit Knowledge.

Google Wave can be your best alternative for a Collaborative learning sessions in real time or a brainstorming session and a replacement for over price web-meeting software’s. Here you can instantly translate in to 40 different languages.

Wondering, what to do about Assessments? No more worries Google Wave is Open Source. It will be possible to integrate external application for live polling (Try some R&D around this).

I know you’re missing SCORM at the end.

I think I forget to mention that most of these services come free of charge from Google. Oops...! Most of these Google products are blocked in your organization, then its good time to rethink.

Innovate for making the things simpler and look at things in a different manner with more creative and efficient way. Focus innovation on not just only solving present learning problem but also sense and provides solutions for future learning needs includes technical and non-technical. It’s also about utilizing the social media in right proportion to increase collaboration among learners. Focus on transforming knowledge in to action and also formalize your informal learning initiatives. We are living in a world of 140 words (Twitter) so think about Instructional Design in a more refined and defined manner.

Just imagine this world without Google and Apple products and you will realize the true potential of Innovation. So the next time you were trying to solve any learning problem or preparing your learning strategy tries to be more innovative.
